OUR PHILOSOPHY

What PHD Stands For

The letters in our name are the three promises behind every lesson: play the game with joy, grow healthier through it, and develop skills that keep improving for life.

P

PLAY

Tennis is a game first. We learn by rallying, playing points, and enjoying the game itself — not by standing in lines — so players fall in love with playing from day one.

  • Rally-based learning, not just drills
  • Play is part of how we learn
  • A court atmosphere players want to return to

H

HEALTH

Tennis is a lifetime sport. Correct technique and smart movement protect joints, build fitness, and keep players of every age active for decades.

  • Technique that protects shoulders, elbows & knees
  • Footwork and movement as fitness training
  • Warm-ups and habits that prevent injury

D

DEVELOPMENT

Progress you can see. Each fundamental builds on the last, with clear goals at every stage — from a first rally to confident match play.

  • A step-by-step fundamentals pathway
  • Clear goals for every stage of the game
  • Steady growth, measured in rallies and matches

THE CURRICULUM

The Eight Fundamentals

Every lesson at PHD works from the same complete foundation — the eight fundamentals every tennis player needs. Select any fundamental to see what it covers and how it is practiced.

TRY IT — RULES & SCORING

Learn the Score, Point by Point

Tennis scoring confuses every beginner — love, fifteen, deuce, advantage. Call the points yourself below and watch how a game is won.

    — GAME SCORE —

    OPPONENT

    0

    Games — You: 0 Games — Opponent: 0

Press a button each time a point is won. First to 4 points, by 2, takes the game.

    THE POINT LADDER

    0 pts“Love”
    1 pt15
    2 pts30
    3 pts40
    4 ptsGame — if ahead by 2

    DEUCE & ADVANTAGE

At 40–40 the score is deuce. From deuce, a player must win two points in a row: the first gives advantage, the second wins the game. Lose the advantage point and it is deuce again.

    GAMES, SETS & THE TIEBREAK

Win 6 games — by 2 — to take a set. At 6 games all, a tiebreak decides it: first to 7 points, again by 2. Matches are usually best of 3 sets.

    THE LEARNING PATH

From First Grip to Match Play

New players follow the same pathway, at their own pace. Every stage builds directly on the one before it.

    1

    Grip & Ready Position

Hold the racket correctly and learn the split step — the base every shot stands on.

    2

    Groundstrokes

Forehand and backhand with a full, relaxed swing and a consistent contact point.

    3

    Serve & Volley

A reliable serve to start every point, and the confidence to finish points at the net.

    4

    Rules & Scoring

Play real points: keep score, call lines fairly, and understand match formats.

    5

    Drills & Match Play

Target drills and coached match play turn technique into a game that holds up under pressure.
